Evaluating Your Website - Pt 3 of 6

The Look & Feel of Your Website

You know that old phrase you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. 


You only have a matter of seconds between the time that someone enters your site to the time they decide it is a place where they would like to explore or not.  I was told the that a human being has an attention span of 7 seconds and a goldfish has an attention span of 8. I don’t know whether that is true or not but we definitely have visceral reactions to visual stimuli and that is clearly true of websites. 

What is your first initial reaction to any particular website? Does it make you feel warm and fuzzy or does it repulse you?  What impression does it leave you with?

Below are some questions you might ask yourself about your website and other sites that you encounter.
  • What is your initial reaction to the site?
  • What feeling did you get?
  • Did it make you feel good, bad or indifferent?
  • Is the website cluttered or busy?
  • Is it difficult for your eye to rest on any one place?
  • Is white or open space used on the site?
  • Is the design of the site consistent with the product or service it is trying to solicit?
  • Are there any unnecessary visual elements on the site that actually interferes with the translation of information?
  • Is the design and color pallet appealing?
  • Are colors used appropriate to the target market?
  • Is the layout orderly or chaotic and s with the websites theme?
  • Is there a design theme carried throughout the site?
  • Does every page on the site have consistent layout?
  • Does it reasonably address the target markets visual needs?
  • Does the art and graphics on the site convey a greater idea and contribute to the written content on the site?
  • Are the graphics and layout professional executed?
