Parkinson’s Law: “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
In 1955 Cyril Northcote Parkinson wrote this first in a satirical essay for the Economist, as commentary and critique on the state of efficiency of public administration and the civil service bureaucracy.
Mr. Parkinson’s quote is just as relevant then as it is today. We are all guilty of this. We settle to do what is easy and routine to fill time allotted for work versus what is hard and what will challenge us.
A friend of mine owns who an inbound marketing company that has a tag or positioning line I admire: “Be Better Do More”. This is one of the best taglines I have ever heard and are words we all could live by.
Being idle is definitely a choice. To choose not to do something is a decision by omission. Idleness might be beneficial from a meditative or metaphysical standpoint but in business it can kill you.
Even making bad decisions and failures are better than doing nothing and making no decisions. If you make a bad decision you can always learn from it and move on equipped with that knowledge. If you make no decision you learn nothing and you actually fall further behind. I maintain that marketing is not an option, it is mandatory. It is a part of doing business! There are no excuses and nobody wins by being passive.
So in the words of almighty Nike, “JUST DO IT!” I know people hate when others say this, but it is the truth. No pain no gain.
In my last 7 published blogs I laid out a simple step by step process of writing a marketing plan. I suggest possibly beginning there but even if you don’t I encourage readers to at least come up with a budget, as modest as it may be and start experimenting using your best judgment.
