Ten Year Anniversary of the Modular Home Builder blog

Yes, it has been 10 years!

I can still remember sitting at a small desk in the spare bedroom trying to decide how to begin a blog that the entire modular housing industry would want to read. Not a small task.

The blog started on July 30, 2007 and the first article only had 3 people read it that day. By the end of the week it had 14 visitors.

Today Modular Home Coach gets 1.2 visitors every minute of the day 365 days a year. Readers from Australia start the day off followed by visitors from Japan, China and the Philippines. That is followed by modular people from England and Sweden.

Last, but by far not the least, are my visitors from the US.

From the blog’s inception I have wanted to do more for our industry than just write about it.

One day about 5 years ago I got a call from a modular builder that lived about 25 miles away who asked if we could meet for breakfast and talk about the modular industry.

One of the Builder Breakfasts in Frederick, MD

That was the start of my Builder Breakfasts that grew from just the two of us in a Diner to a large restaurant that could 24 people max to where it is now, a restaurant in Lewisburg, PA that can hold up to 70.

From that sprang the idea of holding Boot Camps where builders and factory people could learn from others in our industry. There have been Boot Camps in PA, NJ, MA and IN. Then came the Round Tables, held in Lewisburg, PA. The first one saw factory people come together and discuss their future roles in the industry. Next came the Builder Round Table with builders discussing the future of modular construction.

Early on at one of the Builder Breakfast I met Tom Hardiman, the then new Executive Director of the MHBA, when he attended a breakfast. Those breakfast meetings with him lead to his tremendous help in making my Round Tables successful and also speaking at several of the Builder Breakfasts and Boot Camps.

New England Summit co-hosted by the MHBA and Modcoach

This Spring we co-hosted the very successful New England Summit in Massachusetts. We hope to do more of these in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions.

About two years ago I was introduced to Devin Perry and John Lingerfelt from the NAHB’s Building Systems Council. They have spoken at one of my Builder Breakfasts and explained that they are building a stronger council serving all the members, especially modular. I’ve seen the proof first hand, especially at this year's IBS where the BSC had a very successful speaker Lounge, something our industry has never had before.

Speaking to Builders and Factory Folk at Westchester Homes

I’ve also spoken to builders and sales reps at several factories about the changes I see happening and how to improve their sales and marketing.

All this from one morning sitting at my desk in a spare bedroom wondering if I could help the modular housing industry by writing a blog.

I want to thank all the builders and industry people from around the world, all the builders and factory people I have met at my events, the people from the MHBA and the BSC, the people that have donated generously to help me keep the blog going and especially my advertisers without whom I could never have accomplished my goals.

Thank You so much and I can’t wait to start the next 10 years!

Hi Gary,
Great Job. Destiny for sure. Your efforts go far greater than you will ever know. You have introduced many people to other people and have no idea who they are or how it happened. When I was a factory sales consultant I used many of your articles to provide extra knowledge, encouragement, and information to my Builders and Builder Prospects. There are people who's circles would never have met had it not been for you to follow your intuition / passion for the our Industry. Way to TAKE ACTION when most would have not. Please keep up the good work.

David E. Johnson - 32+ year veteran of our Industry.

Gary, your blog is a tremendous asset for our industry. It’s a great source of industry news, but also a uniquely valuable source of recommendations about how a modular company can improve its performance.

Your blog not only does a great job trumpeting our industry. It also serves as our industry’s conscience.

I hope you’re willing and able to carry on for another 10 years.

Thank you!
