Changing the Perception of Career and Technical Education

“I am looking down the pipeline, and the workforce numbers are slim. Do you have any graduates looking for work?”
Mercy Career & Technical High School (Mercy CTE) receives many calls like this, especially from employers looking for employees in the trades industry. Mercy CTE is the only Catholic, co-educational, career and technical high school in the USA. It is a small urban school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. A student graduates with a high school diploma and industry-recognized certifications in his/her chosen career field. Mercy CTE has excellent outcomes. Please visit www.mercycte.org to learn more.

Mercy’s challenge has to been to change the perception of career and technical education. Many still perceive this path to be for the those students who are not able to handle a college prep high school. Slowly, Mercy CTE is seeing more of its building trades students go into full time employment or enter a union after graduation but the numbers are still small. Mercy continues to educate the parents, form stronger partnerships with unions and businesses, integrate technology into all of its career programs, and provide career guidance as soon as a student begins at Mercy CTE.

Mercy CTE welcomes ideas as to how to promote this message. Please contact cglatts@merycte.org with your ideas.
