Selling to the Obese New Home Buyer

In a study released by the CDC and Duke University, 42% of all Americans will be obese by 2030...that's only 10 years from now folks.  Adding to the problem will be the 14% of the population that will be morbidly obese.


The public health implications are staggering. Overweight and obesity is linked to many chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and cancer. The economic burden obesity puts on the health care system amounts to about $147 billion dollars a year, or 9% of annual medical costs.

My city has a population of 30,000 people.  We have 3 Chinese buffets, 2 American buffets, a Pizza buffet and even a Mexican buffet.  58% of all school children are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program.  Participation by children in sports activities has dropped dramatically over the past decade.  

Going to the mall or shopping in Walmart is always discouraging when I see hundreds of obese children there, some even have oxygen tanks with them.

So what does all this mean to the modular housing factory and new home builder?

It simply means that what was once something that nobody wanted to talk about is now front and center and our industry needs to introduce products into our homes to help this group of people. 

As modular home builders, you will be faced with many more obese new home buyers than ever and how you interact with them to help ease their burden of trying to fit their frames into what is considered a 'standard' house could mean the difference between selling them a new home or simply pissing them off.

Introducing the following options to them is tricky but you must find a way to do it if it appears they could benefit from one of them.

Here are just some of the things that you could be adding to homes right now:


36" wide Interior doors


8' wide sliding patio doors


Installing push pads for doors and alarms

ADA showers

ADA toilets and grab bars

Expandable toilet seats capable of holding a 1,000 pound person
